Declared as a nature refuge, it is part of an important 'nature corridor' linking to Girraween National Park, and the land contains rare ecosystems and habitat for rare wildlife. Don't forget your binoculars! Birds commonly seen and heard include wrens, finches, thornbills, cuckoo-shrikes, whistlers, fantails, tree-creepers, lorikeets, spinebills and other honeyeaters, warblers and black cockatoos. Short walking trails lead through the bush and, especially in spring and summer, show a profusion of wildflowers. Wallabies and wallaroos, marsupial mice, ringtail possums and sugar gliders have all been seen just meters from the cottage.
